Experimental Method for Determining Surface Energy Anisotropy and Its Application to Magnesia

چکیده
An experimental technique has been developed to determine the surface energy anisotropy of crystalline solids. The technique is based on atomic force microscopy measurements, which are used to quantify the geometry of thermal grooves, and electron backscattered diffraction pattern measurements, which are used to specify crystallographic orientations. Observations are made at circumferential thermal grooves, where it is assumed that Herring’s local equilibrium condition for a triple junction holds and that the grain-boundary energy is independent of its boundary plane. A truncated double Fourier series is used to approximate the surface energy, and the unknown coefficients of the series are determined by fitting the observations to the local equilibrium condition. The method, which should be applicable to most polycrystalline materials, has been tested on magnesia that has been thermally grooved at 1400°C in air. The maximum of the best-fit surface energy function is at (111) and the minimum is at (100). The relative surface energies of the low-index planes are g110 /g100 5 1.040 6 0.008 and g111/g100 5 1.072 6 0.010.

Measuring the Influence of Grain-Boundary Misorientation on Thermal Groove Geometry in Ceramic Polycrystals
We have used electron backscattered diffraction patterns to determine the misorientation of 201 adjacent pairs of grains in a magnesia polycrystal. The width and depth of the thermal grooves formed by these same grain boundaries were also measured by atomic force microscopy (AFM). By simulating the errors associated with the AFM observations and comparing our observations to existing data for m...

Introduction The main objective of this contribution is to focus on the portion of the comminution process which deals with the prediction of the energy consumption due to the comminution portion of the milling processes. The comminution energy in mineral processing and cement industry is usually determined by empirical Bond Work Index (BWI), regardless of the mechanical properties of a rock....

In this study, slag penetration into a magnesia refractory monolithic was investigated by the crucible test method. A synthetic calcium aluminate slag system has been used to study commercial magnesia mix refractory for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 hours at 1450°C and 1600°C. It has been shown that the penetration rate is controlled by a diffusion mechanism at 1450°C. In this case, capillaries are the ...

In this essay, lipase from Burkholderia cepacia was immobilized into 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS) and tetramethoxysilane (TMOS) derived sol-gels. GPTMS:TMOS molar ratio of 1:3 was found to yield the best result. The morphological characteristics were investigated based on SEM and BET analysis. Sample mean pore diameter was 39.1 nm, it had a specific surface area of 60 m2/g prior to...
متن کاملFinite element simulation of pyroplastic deformation, anisotropic shrinkage and heterogeneous densification for ceramic materials during liquid phase sintering process
Pyroplastic deformation is a distortion of the ceramic shape during the sintering process. It occurs because the flow of the vitreous phase at high temperature and the applied stress due to the weight of the product during sintering process. The aim of this paper deals with describing a numerical-experimental method to evaluate the pyroplastic deformation, to predict the anisotropic shrinkage a...
